Visitor Guide

Everything you need to know for the perfect LBI trip.

Getting to LBI

By Car

LBI is accessible via the Route 72 Causeway from Manahawkin. From NYC, take the Garden State Parkway South to Exit 63 (2–2.5 hours). From Philly, take I-295 to Route 70 East (1.5–2 hours).

By Bus

NJ Transit Bus 137 runs from Port Authority in NYC to Manahawkin (~2.5 hours). From there you'll need a taxi or rideshare to reach the island.

Island Jitney

A seasonal shuttle runs the length of the island during peak summer months, operated by the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce.

Traffic Tips

Worst Times

Friday afternoons (2–8 PM) inbound, Saturday mornings (9 AM–12 PM) for weekly rentals, and Sunday afternoons (2–6 PM) for departures. The causeway can back up for miles.

Best Times to Arrive

Early Friday morning (before 10 AM), late Friday night (after 9 PM), or Thursday evening. Saturday after 2 PM is smooth once the rush clears.

On-Island

Long Beach Boulevard is the main artery. Use side streets during peak season. Speed limits are mostly 25–35 mph. Most beaches require parking permits.

Beach Essentials

Beach Badges

Most towns require badges mid-June through Labor Day. Daily, weekly, and seasonal options available. Kids under 12 are usually free.

Lifeguards

Guarded beaches have lifeguards from 10 AM to 5 PM, late June through Labor Day. Red flags mean no swimming.

What to Bring

SPF 30+ sunscreen, chairs, umbrella, water, snacks, and a boogie board. Gear rentals available in Ship Bottom and Beach Haven.

Weather & Best Times

Peak Season (Jul–Aug)

Temps in the 80s–90s°F, water reaches mid-70s by August. The busiest time — book early. Everything is open and buzzing.

Shoulder Season (Jun & Sep)

Pleasant 70s–80s°F. Fewer crowds, lower prices, most businesses open. September is a local favorite — warm water, mild weather.

Off-Season

Many businesses close for winter. October features gorgeous foliage and Chowderfest. Great for quiet beach walks and fishing.

Getting Around

Driving

The island is 18 miles end to end (30–40 min drive, longer in traffic). One main road connects all towns.

Biking

LBI is very bike-friendly with lanes on many roads. Rentals available island-wide. One of the best ways to avoid parking hassles.

Rideshare

Uber and Lyft operate on LBI but availability is limited at peak times. Local taxis include LBI Taxi and Island Taxi.

Safety Tips

Rip Currents

The #1 ocean hazard. If caught, don't fight it — swim parallel to shore until free. Always swim near a lifeguard.

Sun Safety

Sand and water increase UV exposure. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. Wear hats and seek shade between 10 AM – 4 PM.

Island Rules

No alcohol on the beach. No dogs in summer (most towns). Quiet hours 10 PM – 8 AM. No bonfires without a permit.
